½ cup shortening
½ cup sugar
½ cup molasses
1 egg, beaten slightly with a fork
2 ½ cups sifted all-purpose flour
½ t. soda
1 tspn. Baking powder
1 tspn. Ginger
1 tspn. cloves
1 tspn. Cinnamon

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening, sugar and molasses. Add egg. Sift flour, soda, baking powder, ginger, cloves and cinnamon. Add to liquid mixture.

Mix together with hands.

Let chill overnight or at least for several hours. Roll out ¼ inch thick between floured board and wax paper. Cut with cookie cutters.

Bake 10-12 minutes at 350 degrees.

OK. So Mary gave me lots of recipes over the years. She's a great cook! This is a good recipe for gingerbread. Be sure to roll them thickly so that they won't break. The larger the cutter the more difficult to pick up from the baking pan. So, thickness is important. Have fun decorating them once they are cooled!
