Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 Cup scalded milk
3/4 Cup Sugar
4 Cups flour, sifted
1 egg, beaten
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. salt
2 Tbls. shortening, melted
1 pkg. yeast dissolved in 1/4 cup warm water

Directions:
Directions:
Cool milk to lukewarm and mix with sugar, melted shortening and salt. Mix in yeast water. Mix in 1 1/2 cups flour, then set aside in a warm place to rise and become light. Add nutmeg, egg and enough of rest of flour to make a soft dough. Knead on floured board. Cover and let rise. Toss on board and roll out to about 3/4 inch thickness. Cut to doughnut shape and let rise again. Save the center of the doughnut shape for doughnut holes. Fry in deep hot fat (365 degrees). Start with raised side down and then turn. Cook until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Dust with sugar or powdered sugar while still warm. You can use this same recipe to make Bismarck's. Just cut into 3 inch squares, fry, drain and as soon as you can handle fill with your favorite jelly and dust with powdered sugar.

Personal Notes:
Mother, Ida McMillan, would make these on the weekends when we were young. We were always right there to get the doughnut holes as fast as they were made.
