½ cup butter or margarine (1 stick)
3 Tablespoons powdered sugar
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
dash of salt
1 cup flour

Jam to fill cookies

Directions:
Directions:
Let butter sit out of refrigerator until room temperature. Cream butter, sugar, salt, and vanilla until smooth. Gradually add flour and completely mix. Roll into small balls and drop on ungreased cookie sheet. Make small indentation with finger in each cookie. Fill cookie center with tart jam (jelly does NOT work). Bake at 350º for about 10 -12 minutes.

I remember jam cookies from my childhood. They were one of my mother's specialties. She would let me help by pushing my finger in the center of each cookie to make the hole for the jam. She always insisted on using damson plum jam for the best cookies.
