1 c butter, softened
2 c sugar
3 eggs, separated
3/4 c buttermilk
2 tsp soda
3 c flour
1 tsp nutmeg
2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cloves
2 c berries, well drained

Easy Penuche Icing:
1/2 c butter
1 c brown sugar
1/4 c milk
2 c powdered sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter, sugar and egg yolks. Stir the soda into the buttermilk and add to the creamed mixture. Sift flour with spices and add to creamed mixture. Fold in well drained berries. Beat egg whites stiffly and fold in. Bake in 2 (10-inch) pans, greased and floured, in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes. Cool and ice with Easy Penuche Icing.

Icing: Melt butter in saucepan. Add brown sugar. Boil over low heat for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Stir in milk. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Cool to lukewarm. Gradually add powdered sugar. Beat until thick enough to spread. If icing becomes too stiff, and a little hot water.

I don't use cloves or nutmeg when making this cake. I use 2 9" round pans. This cake is very good with blueberries.
