1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
4 tbsp cocoa
2 tbs hot coffee
1 tsp red liquid beatable coloring
1 7/8 Flour (2 cups minus 2 tbsp)
1 tsp salt
1 tsp soda
1 cup sour milk or buttermilk
1 tsp vanilla

Cream shortening add sugar gradually then cream until fluffly Blend in well beaten eggs
Now mix cocoa, red coloring and hot coffee together to form a smooth paste. Blend it into the creamed mixture immediately (as cocoa mixture tends to stiffen upon standing)
Sift flour once before measuring. Then sift flour salt and soda together and add to creamed mixture alternately with the sour milk ( or butter milk) Blend in the vanilla
Pour into well greased and floured pan using one 8 inch tube center pan (3 inches deep or one 8 inch square pan or 2 round 8 inch layer pans
Bake cake in moderate oven 350 degrees. If in tube center pan, bake 55-60 minutes. If in square pan, bake 70 minutes. If in square pan, bake 7- minutes. If you bake your cake in layer pans, bake 40-45 minutes.
