Loaf:
½ cup shortening
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1¾ cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon soda
½ teaspoon cinnamon
½ nutmeg
1 cup sweetened applesauce
½ cup chopped walnuts (if desired)

Glaze:
½ cup sifted confectioners sugar
1 tablespoon water

Directions:
Directions:
Stir shortening to soften; gradually add sugar, creaming till light. Add eggs; beat till light and fluffy. Stir together dry ingredients; add to creamed mixture alternately with applesauce, beating after each addition; stir in nuts. Pour into paper-lined 9½x5x3-inch loaf pan. Bake in moderate oven (350º) about an hour. Cool in pan 10 minutes; remove to cooling rack. While still warm, top with sugar glaze.
